What Is Clean Fiction and Why Is It Important?
Honoring God
I started this blog to promote clean fiction, so I think explaining what I mean when I say clean fiction makes a good first post. There are a lot of different ideas about what clean fiction is, and I am sharing my opinion on this matter.
As a Christian, I ultimately want to honor God with what I read, which is why I believe clean fiction is so important. Christians are called to be set apart from the world. Clean fiction gives us something to read that doesn’t have inappropriate, ungodly, worldly content in it.
What is Clean?
Clean means free from filth, unwanted matter, and morally uncontaminated.
Clean books should be free of swearing, cursing, or profanity. They should NOT have on-page sex, smut, or spicy romance. Characters should not be smoking, doing drugs, or drinking alcohol. There should not be EXTREME violence.
I don’t consider a book clean if it has swearing or cursing, on-page sex, ungodly relationships, and drugs or alcohol. These things are of the world and not something I want to read about. If these things are dwelt upon and made out to be normal and okay then that makes a book unclean. If an author mentions these things as a way to let Christ’s light shine through then that is for a more mature audience and not necessarily unclean. Just because we are Christians does not mean we are perfect or that there isn’t sin in the world.
Clean Fiction
So, if all this shouldn’t be in clean books, what should? If you’re like me you probably like gripping stories that are complex and have all the feelings. Clean fiction DOES NOT have to be boring and simple! It should be realistic because even though we are set apart that doesn’t mean we live in a flawless world. We are all sinners and we need to be aware of the fact that the world is not perfect and that is why Jesus came. He wants us to shine his light in everything including books.
I want to read books that are full of action, adventure, and complex characters. I want clean romance, appropriate humor, and banter. I also want deep, thought-provoking ideas with realistic struggles between good and evil.
I want action-packed stories without unnecessary killing and murder. This does not mean I want no violence though, because that would make it boring. I believe it doesn’t need to be gory and brutal to make it interesting. I don’t think weapons are bad but how are they being used? Are our morals being compromised with the violence? If weapons are being used to murder unethically I do not want to read that sort of thing.
Uncompromised Morals
The books I read should not compromise my morals or what I believe is right. My goal for this blog is to provide the kind of books and stories that I am comfortable reading as a Christian. I hope that I can give other readers who enjoy clean fiction a place to find books that might otherwise be looked over.
If you read through this entire blog, thank you! I hope that my words have found someone that needed them. Let’s take a stand for clean fiction and share the light of Christ through books! If you enjoyed this blog stick around for more!
